Keith Spry Pool

Keith Spry Pool

22 November 2015

Keith Spry Pool has experienced a huge spike in swimmers since its upgrade was completed in March 2015. The new children’s pool and learn-to-swim pool have seen the number of children and young family attendees swell.

The numbers enrolled in learn to swim programmes since the upgrade have increased by more than 75% compared with prior to the upgrade and are trending upwards. The increased children enrolled in programmes is a direct result of Council’s investment in the purpose-built learn-to-swim facilities, focused on getting children into the water and learning to swim.

Previously Keith Spry Pool’s general facilities were considered too cold for kindergarten and primary school children because there were no purpose built facilities. As a result local parents took their children elsewhere in the city, as far away as Porirua, Karori or Kilbirnie. The new, warm, play and learn to swim pools have created a comfortable environment for kids and parents. Parents and children are now able to use their local pool, rather than having to drive across Wellington, which is helping to build on the local sense of community.

The total number of swimmers has also increased dramatically. Total swimming numbers since the opening have increased significantly to more than 40,437 in the most recent quarter.

Keith Spry Pool is now the busiest suburban pool in Wellington.

Along with two new childrens pools, the upgrade included new changing rooms for families, males and females.

From 2017/18 the new Johnsonville library will be constructed on a neighbouring site, which will integrate with Keith Spry Pool and provide a community hub of facilities. This is intended to further increase the local sense of community in the northern suburbs area.
