Fatal Head-on crash, Karapiro
The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was returning from a Waikato Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) flight to Taupo, when the team was diverted to SH1, south of Cambridge to the scene of a fatal, 2-vehicle collision. A south-bound people mover and a northbound sedan, collided head-on. The driver of the sedan remained trapped in the vehicle and died at the scene; A 5-month pregnant woman in her 30’s, a passenger of the people mover, was flown to Waikato Hospital with a fractured sternum; several other passengers, from both vehicles, were transported from the scene by road ambulance. At the time of the callout, the helicopter was conveniently located 10 minutes south of the crash on a nearly direct flight path.
