Church Brings Christmas to Mum of Six

Timothy

Christmas is looking brighter for one Manurewa mum of six, thanks to volunteers from City Impact Church. Last Saturday, church members gave Christmas gift boxes to her and each of her children. Earlier in the year, a team from the church came to her home to clean, garden, cut down trees, and fix cupboards. They also donated brand new bikes for all the children, and a trampoline.

With a new baby, and her eldest son recovering from concussion, Julianna had been finding life a struggle.

“City Impact Church has given us strength to carry on. They have shown me and my kids that there is hope - that there are people out there who care.”

Julianna and her children were just some of over 1000 people who received Christmas gift boxes from City Impact Church last Saturday.

Each year, church members choose tags from a Christmas tree, representing people referred by community organisations. Then they take away a box to fill up with gifts for that person.

“Christmas can be a tough time for many families and we want to let them know that we care,” says City Impact Church Community Impact Manager Mary-Kath Laita.

Recipients range from elderly community members, to those with disabilities, to single parents, to children and infants.

Over 500 church volunteers turned out on the day to help bring Christmas to their community. While many delivered boxes, others carried out home and garden maintenance for people. Inspired by the help his family had received, Julianna’s son Jeremiah was among those who did gardening for an Avondale resident in need of assistance.

“We love having the chance to show God’s love to people in a practical way,” says Mary-Kath.
