Police launch of 'Walk Away'

Counties Manukau Police have teamed up with a renowned New Zealand singer and South Auckland High school students in attempt to raise awareness around family violence.

Given that December and January is our most high-risk period for family violence the Counties Manukau District Commander’s Choir has linked in with Tina Cross and students from across the District to re-record her song “Walk Away”.

Media are invited to attend the launch of the collaboration at Manukau Police Station where there will be a live performance followed by the release of a short-video which will be rolled out nationally.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush is attending and will be available for interviews on this collaboration.

“Today’s partnership between the choir and Tina is symbolic of what Police are trying to do in this space nationally and that is work together with our partner agencies and our communities to reduce family violence,” says Commissioner Bush.

Counties Manukau Police are continuing their focus on family violence during this period with a campaign where we provide extra support; including food parcels, Christmas presents, prevention advice and extra visits to our high-risk families.

District Family Violence Coordinator Senior Sergeant Sharon Price says the grim reality is that many of our frontline officers will spend most days in homes dealing with family violence.

“Christmas is a stressful period for everyone and that continues into January when a lot of families have children on school holidays.

Often when we investigate these types of incidents, we find that someone knew something about what was going on.

So we are asking everyone in our community to stand up and speak out.”

“We want all children, women and men to feel safe in their homes over this festive period but Police cannot do it alone.

Family violence is a community problem and we all need to work together to keep our communities safe.
