Navy Applies Pedal Power for Good Cause

Twelve members of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) will trade ships for bicycles this week to raise money for the Foundation for Youth Development (FYD).

With the support of BP, they will compete in the BDO Wellington to Auckland Cycle Race which will see the team leave Lower Hutt this Sunday to cover over 800 kilometres in seven days to reach Pukekohe.

The BP RNZN team will battle it out for a prize pool valued at $150,000 which, if successful, they will donate to the FYD.

Team Captain, Lieutenant Commander (LT CDR) Roger Saynor, says that physical fitness is a huge part of Navy life and the 12 men and women of all ages are looking forward to taking up the challenge of cycling from one end of the North Island to the other.

“We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country by sea many times and it’ll be a pleasure to visit the North Island towns and cities that are home to, and have supported, our naval personnel over the years.

“We’ll be giving our all to win and raise money for FYD, which gives young New Zealanders personal and educational tools to enhance employment prospects, enabling them to be leaders among their peers now and in their communities in the future,” says LT CDR Saynor.

BP managing director, Matt Elliott says: “We are honoured to partner with BP RNZN team and we’re proud to support the Royal New Zealand Navy in its 75th year.”
