Penny Hulse to open art trail

Penny Hulse to open art trail

Auckland Council Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse will officially open the Harbourview Sculpture Trail on Saturday 5 March, announced today by Peninsula Arts Inc., the organising charity.

The Harbourview Sculpture Trail, supported by Auckland Council, is one of Auckland’s hotly anticipated events on the city’s art and culture calendar with 40 artists selected from throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Netherlands.

Auckland Council Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse said “As a Waitakere councillor and a Te Atatu Peninsula resident I am extremely proud of, and excited about this event, which just gets better and better. It’s a must see and make sure you set aside several hours because there’s a huge amount to see and explore and be utterly wowed by,” she said.

Peninsula Arts Inc., President Holly Vaihu, said the charity worked closely with Auckland Council in what has become an ambitious project, initiated largely by local volunteers.

“The Trail would not be possible without the support of Auckland Council. We are very grateful for the help of the Henderson Massey Local Board for providing the open public park to display 36 original artworks and, along with sponsorship, this partnership will enable visitors from throughout the country to experience the city’s natural beauty, only 15 minutes from the CBD.”

“One of our long term goals for Peninsula Arts is to assist with the facilitation of permanent sculpture and public art in open spaces in the West Auckland community. Auckland Council’s vision for Auckland as the world’s most liveable city is enhanced through it’s great support for public art and it’s exciting to see some really stimulating and thought provoking work springing up across the city over the past few years.”

“This year’s event has several new components to the show. An Art Shop will be onsite everyday throughout the three-week season and we will be open through the beautiful twilight hours every Friday and Saturday with gourmet food trucks and enchanting roving entertainment on offer. We are delighted to have the interactive kid’s ‘Creation Station’ returning, presented in partnership with Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, which will give young visitors a chance to get hands on with a growing collaborative sculpture,” she said.

Artists and sculptures were selected by a panel that included Andrew Clifford Director of Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, Monique Redmond Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of Visual Arts at AUT and Harbourview Sculpture Trail Curator Sally Lush.

The Harbourview Sculpture Trail at Harbourview Peoples Park, Te Atatu Peninsula, Auckland is open daily from Saturday 5 March to Monday 28 March 2016. For more details, visit www.harbourviewsculpture.com
