Reacting to this evening’s vote by the Auckland Council to quash the decision of a Council committee to change the Unitary Plan’s intensification rules, pro democracy group Democracy Action Chairperson Lee Short says:
“This is a win for democracy. Finally the democratic rights of ratepayers are being upheld, but the public have had to fight hard.”
“Without the support of the Maori Statutory Board member on the committee that voted this change in, the proposal would not have passed. Clearly unelected Maori Statutory Board members should be removed from the process.”
“Today’s meeting was about democracy, and today democracy won. Let’s hope this signifies a new direction for the Council.“
