Vogelmorn Community-led Visioning - in collaborations with WCC
A fresh and progressive vision for shared
community space is emerging in Wellington's hilltop pseudo
suburb of Vogelmorn! Community members, local organisations,
designers and the Wellington City Council have been hard at
work exploring a collaborative vision for a disused bowling
green and surrounding community infrastructure; once a hive
of activity now in need of being carried into a new era. The
wonderful 1930's Vogelmorn Hall and the old Vogelmorn
Bowling Club border the green and the Vogelmorn Tennis Club
is across the street. These form the notable existing
structures which this community have recognised both for
their existing value and their future potential. A plethora
of ideas have been floated including potential for organised
community building, education and up-skilling, celebrating
ecology, food growing and sharing and sustainable and
conscious use of resources.
The final working event of the participatory design series is this Sunday 28th of February 2-5pm, where a specialist in community-led development Anne Cunningham will facilitate a democratic prioritisation of ideas raised to date. Anne is visiting for this occasion from her base at Te Putahi - Christchurch Centre for Architecture and City Making, and brings decades of experience in various countries working on resonant projects.
On Saturday the 2nd of April 2016 a conceptual vision for the Precinct will be presented for feedback before it is developed into a formal proposal to feed into the Wellington City Council 2016/2017 Annual Plan process.
All are welcome to come along to both events on the 28th Feb and 2nd of April, to share in community thinking and see where the process has gone. Catering is provided and on the 2nd of April entertainment too - keep an eye out on https://vogelmornprecinct.wordpress.com/ for updates and special guest information.
The Vogelmorn Precinct project is platformed by a collaboration between Co-op Cooperative Ltd, a design collective focused on participatory architecture, a newly formed Vogelmorn Precinct Steering Group and the Wellington City Council. Together their aim is to deliver to WCC a community-led feasibility study for the Vogelmorn area. Local Brooklyn architects Nick Mouat (Athfield Architects) and Sam Donald (Parsonson Architects) donate their time and expertise while Cally O'Neill, an architectural designer and managing director of Co-op Cooperative, co-ordinates the collaboration and workshops. This is the first time Wellington City Council have been involved with a community-led participatory process of this nature and the positive response has been a breath of fresh air for all involved. Heart warming encouragement of voices and listeners come from all sides of the room (and/or the green!) as excited and inspired conversation builds pictures of a more sustainable and connected future. Film for Change have been documenting the process and a small clip from Workshop #1 is available for viewing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95-87O-PMAc
The Vogelmorn Precinct feasibility Study offshoots from Kaka Project; a 2014/2015 collaboration between Wellington City Council and the Brooklyn community looking at Brooklyn wide community resources.
