Council Move Undemocratic

Responding to the news that Auckland Council has sought to appeal the decision of last week, where Councillors voted to oppose changes to housing density regulations,Democracy Action Chairman, Lee Short, says:

“This decision appears inconsistent with the very clear instruction from Councillors last week to withdraw the proposals.”

“Rather than respecting a democratic decision, it appears Auckland Council planners are attempting to plough ahead and still not go through a proper consultation process under the Local Government Act to allow those affected property owners to have their say.”

“The ball is now in the court of Auckland Councillors - to demand these officials front up, explain their actions and ensure they are reprimanded for a move which appears to dishonour the democratic fabric of Auckland Council.”
