Air Force Celebrates 75 Years of Women’s Service

The Royal New Zealand Air Force has celebrated 75 years of women’s service as over 200 airwomen past and present, including veterans who served during the Second World War, gathered at RNZAF Base Ohakea over the weekend.

The Acting Chief of Air Force, Air Commodore (AIRCDRE) Tony Davies said: “We are proud to celebrate 75 years of women serving in the Air Force and to recognise thousands of dedicated and courageous airwomen, and their wonderful contribution over the years.

During the weekend celebrations the veteran women had the opportunity to tour the base and view the Air Force’s new and upgraded aircraft and facilities,

General Lori Robinson, Commander US Pacific Air Forces, was the guest speaker at the evening function. She inspired the audience with her authenticity and ability to recount the leadership lessons learned as her career progressed. The Air Force Band entertained with a selection of music that included wartime songs which brought back wonderful memories.

“It has been a real honour and pleasure for our serving women to host and engage with our veteran airwomen and show them our modern Air Force, as they have shared their stories and experiences with us,” said AIRCDRE Davies.

“It’s also been a fitting way to lead into our biennial Women’s Development Forum and our observance of International Women’s Day.”
