Gavin Dawson Launches Whangarei DC Bid

Gavin Dawson Launches his Campaign for the 2016 Whangarei District Council Election

Whangarei - 17 March 2016.

Gavin Dawson launched his campaign for the Whangarei District Council elections due to take place in September 2016. He will be running in the Okara Ward for the role of Councillor.

His campaign themed Ready for Change will focus on promoting new approaches to infrastructure investment, innovative economic and social development, creating a district that is better prepared to deal with an aging and diverse population, and advocating for a more collaborative and strategic approach for the redevelopment of the Whangarei CBD.

“Whangarei is at an exciting yet challenging stage in its development. It requires fresh ideas and new perspectives if it is going to continue to develop. Everyone must work together, find common ground, and enable an environment that creates a win-win situation for everyone. If we do not do this Whangarei will continue to miss opportunities, be in a constant state of catch up, and not achieve its full potential.”

Gavin is 34 years old and was raised in Whangarei. Over the past 16 years he has worked, travelled, and studied around New Zealand, Australia, and China often returning to Whangarei over this time.

For a majority of the past 16 years he has worked for central government, private companies, and not for profits in policy and governance roles at all levels. He has also worked in the retail, service, and hospitality sectors in various roles during this time.

He will complete a Master’s degree in Governance in August 2016, and a Graduate Diploma in Project Management in November 2016. He has graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Strategic Management, and a Diploma in Politics and Communications.

Community development is important to him and he is active in a range of volunteer and governance roles. These organisations currently include the New Zealand Red Cross and Te Roroi Learning Assistance.

“My professional, academic, and personal life have been full of opportunities to develop and grow, with great memories and some regrets created along the way. I believe that these experiences have been important factors that have shaped me into the person I am now. They provide me with the skills and experience that I need to be an effective and productive District Councillor. I look forward to the coming seven months of campaigning and having the opportunity to meet people and see the communities of our Ward and District. ”
