Funding for old and new in Porirua

Funding for old and new in Porirua

In the first three months of 2016, more than 30 groups have received funding amounting to almost $300,000 from the Wellington Community Trust.

The health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable members of our community has been a focus of the funding to groups in Porirua over the last three months. ‘It’s really important to us that we use our funds to make the biggest possible impact. Getting to know our communities as well as we can helps us to do that, and it’s important to fund both new and established groups,’ comments Mark Cassidy, Chief Executive.

Te Whare Tiaki Wahine Refuge Charitable Trust has received funding from Wellington Community Trust for the first time this year. They play an important role in helping women in violent relationships. Funding pays for social workers to support the women and their children through a time of change and uncertainty. It also contributes to running a 24-hour crisis line and providing them with safehouse accommodation.

The Age Concern visiting service plays a vital role in keeping people from becoming socially isolated as they get older. Funding for travel means they can visit more people.

The Cannons Creek Youth Charitable Trust gives the boys in their care a sense of discipline and belonging and a vital component of that is their boxing academy. This year under the leadership of head coach Latu Talu, a new and very popular class for boys aged 14-18 years has started. Through sport they learn respect, consideration and compassion for others. The funding they receive supports the management of the club and ensures that its work reaches further into the community.
