The Obvious Solution to Auckland Transport Crisis
Two Wheels, not Four
Warkworth, Woodocks Road, [Date]– Motorcycles offer an obvious solution to Auckland Transport Crisis
Alan Campbell, Motorbike World Blogger said today
“The Solution to the transport crisis that plagues Auckland will not be solved by spending billions on train sets, or clogging up the roads further with inefficient buses. The only solution is to utilise the existing infrastructure in different ways.
People value the ability to travel to and from work, and to be able to get out during the day. Public Transport will never fully cater to this need.
There is adequate roading in place across Auckland, we just need to get people out from their cars – the solution is clear – much greater emphasis on, and encouragement for, motorcycling.
It is possible to utilise Motorcycles in Auckland all year round due to our benign climate.
Motorcycling offers a practical, low cost, environmentally friendly and fun way to commute.
The creation of motorcycle only lanes on motorways and through clogged inner city streets, lower registration costs and greater access to free motorcycle parking would solve the current crisis within 12 months, at a fraction of the cost of the current transport spend.”
On the question of Motorcycle safety, Alan said,
“Motorbikes, when used in the correct way, are a safe transport mode. Difficulties arise when older people return to motorcycling, but more so, are caused by the poor driving standards of car drivers. Having more motorcycles on the road will make motorcycling safer, as car drivers get more accustomed to them being around. It also has the added benefit that motorbike riders are invariably better car drivers as well.
There has also been a significant improvement in motorcycle technology over the last few years, with many bikes now being equipped with ABS, Traction Control, Helmet Head Up Displays and even Airbags being available.”
Motorcycles can and should play and integral part of the cities Transport solution. It’s a pity that because the solution is simple, and does not require billons in ratepayer funding, it is not likely to be supported by our unelected bureaucracy.
