Rotorua Business Events showcase the city by Segway

Rotorua – 30 March 2016

The Destination Rotorua Business Events team like to roll a little differently to most regional tourism organisations, so when the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science wanted to learn more about the city the events team decided to host a tour by Segway.

The institute has confirmed it will hold its five-day annual conference at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre in August 2016.

Conference organiser Sharon Tozer spent two days visiting a variety of hotels, dinner venues and experiencing some of what Rotorua has to offer for the 250 delegates expected to attend.

“This was our first time visiting Rotorua in a long time,” said Mrs Tozer.

“Cruising on the Segways around Rotorua is fresh, fun and an interesting method of showcasing how close the hotels and city centre are to the Energy Events Centre. It was also an opportunity to get some great photos.”

The Rotorua Business Events team partnered with local operator Rotorua by Segway to provide a personal, guided tour through some of Rotorua’s most iconic highlights.

Business Events manager Craig Murray said the tour offered an exciting and unique way for the event organiser to experience Rotorua’s world-famous geothermal activity and many other stunning sites.

“Rotorua is such a unique destination and it inspires us to try and do things a little differently,” says Mr Murray.

“Segways are great fun to use and while this tour provided a lot of laughs, it definitely worked to capture the event organiser’s imagination. She was in awe as we rolled past bubbling mud pools, steaming lakes, beautiful gardens, and the historic sites for which Rotorua is so famous.”

The team’s unique approach already seems to be paying dividends with Rotorua reporting a 13 per cent increase in conference activity for the 2015 calendar year. This was more than double the six per cent national benchmark increase and bodes well for the destination’s goal of doubling visitor expenditure to one billion dollars by 2030.
