Wellington prepares for a taste of Thailand to celebrate 60th anniversary
Wellington’s Waterfront will come alive on April 9 and 10 with the sights, tastes and sounds of Thailand.
A free two-day event, the Wellington Thai Festival is being held to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and New Zealand, at Odlin’s Plaza, Taranaki Wharf.
“Our relationship has increasingly deepened to encompass many people-to-people connections, which is the fundamental layer of relationship and this is why we are celebrating” says Ambassador Maris Sangiampongsa, of the Royal Thai Embassy.
This special event will tempt the tastebuds with an abundance of food stalls providing delicious delicacies, some not often found in regular Thai restaurants, such as ‘crispy gems in coconut milk’ and coconut dumplings.
There will be many live performances on both days of the festival, including selected scenes from the prestigious Khon, a classical Thai masked dance-drama.
Event manager, Jocelyn Smith, says “This festival will give a unique insight into Thai culture. Our relationship with Thailand and the importance of this festival is clearly evidenced by the more than 35 professional dancers and musicians being brought to New Zealand by the Thai Ministry of Culture.”
Kids will love to ride on a tuk-tuk, learn to write their name in Thai characters and watch beautiful Thai handcrafts be created.
Experience the Dance of the Four Regions, drumming, singing and more with performers from the local Thai community in Wellington as well as from Thailand.
The Wellington Thai Festival starts from midday and goes until after sunset bothSaturday and Sunday.
Please bring cash for the stalls at the festival.
