Electric vehicles part of smart, future-focused Auckland

Vic Crone, candidate for Mayor of Auckland, has welcomed the Government’s measures to increase New Zealand’s uptake of electric vehicles.

Over one-million road legal, plug-in electric passenger cars and light utility vehicles have now been sold world-wide but despite this growth represent just 0.1 per cent of the billion cars on the world’s roads.

Ms Crone says the Government’s electric vehicle package will enable Auckland to make great strides in embracing new technology to help reduce the city’s congestion and its side-effects.

“My vision for Auckland is to build a smart, future-focused global city that embraces innovative technologies to help us become more financially and environmentally sustainable.

“Some of the worst side-effects of our city’s congestion are the adverse impact on Auckland’s productivity, pollution and health. This is only set to get worse.

“Auckland’s vehicles are expected to contribute at least one-fifth more carbon dioxide in the next decade. For me, its a no brainer to use smart technology to address this. Increasing our city’s electric vehicle uptake is a great start.”

Ms Crone says Auckland desperately needs an injection of fresh ideas to help solve its problems and a strong leader to champion them, “that’s what I’ll bring to the table as Auckland’s next Mayor”, she says.
