Celebrating our nurses and midwives

Auckland DHB is celebrating and thanking its nurses this International Nurses Day.

To mark the occasion, the clinical excellence and compassionate care of nurses and midwives were recognised at the DHB’s annual awards ceremony earlier this week.

“The quality of professional practice and care we see demonstrated by our nurses and midwives makes me extremely proud of the service we provide to our patients and their families,’ says Chief Nursing Officer, Margaret Dotchin.

The A+ Trust Nursing and Midwifery Awards acknowledge the remarkable difference nurses and midwives make to our patients and communities every day.

“These Awards are about establishing a tradition of recognition, recording nursing achievement and enabling nurses and midwives in the future to look back at role models and leaders that have gone before them,” adds Margaret.

More than 120 nominations were received for this year’s awards, which are held between International Day of the Midwife (5 May) and International Nurses Day today (12 May) - the birth date of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing.

Two new awards were introduced this year for primary care and aged residential care nursing to recognise the exceptional work in our DHB community.

“Nurses are key to the experience of our patients and their families when encountering care,” says Ailsa Claire, Chief Executive, “and are often seen as the glue that holds the organisation together. We’re extremely proud of our nurses and midwives, and thank them all for their significant contribution to excellent healthcare.”
