Phil Clearwater to contest Spreydon ward

The People’s Choice is pleased to announce it has selected Councillor Phil Clearwater to contest the Spreydon ward at the upcoming elections.

Councillor Clearwater says “It has been a privilege to represent Spreydon-Heathcote on the council for the past term, and I’m looking forward to campaigning in the Spreydon Ward.”

“As a councillor I’ve worked hard for a more prosperous, fairer, and environmentally friendly Christchurch.”

“I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to develop safe transport options in Christchurch, particularly for cycling and walking, and I’d love to continue that work and also implement necessary changes for Christchurch’s public transport system after the next election”.

The People Choice has also selected Community Board Chair Karolin Potter and Member Melanie Coker to contest the Cashmere-Spreydon Community Board in Spreydon, and Lee Sampson and Community Board Member Helene Mautner to contest the Community Board in Cashmere.

Lee Sampson, new Community Board candidate, says “I’m proud to be able to call Cashmere my home.”

“As an experienced project manager, licensed builder and youth mentor (with Big Brother Big Sister) I have a depth of practical skills and knowledge that will enable me to advocate strongly and effectively for the Cashmere community.”

Biographies

Phil Clearwater, a former Professional Leader of Social Work for the CDHB is the chair of the Council’s Infrastructure, Transport, and Environment Committee. Before being elected on to the Council last term, he served as Chair of the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board for four terms.

As Chair of the Infrastructure, Transport, and Environment Committee, he has overseen the Council’s Major Cycleways Programme, bus priority laning and Council’s role in An Accessible City. He has also led Council’s establishment of the Greater Christchurch Public Transport Joint Committee.

Karolin Potter is chair of the Spreydon-Heathcote community board and is active in many community organisations including school committees, resident association, after school care, Community Law, Tenants Protection, refugee and migrant settlement and she also worked as an educator for the Human Right Commission.

Dr Helene Mautner is a current community board member, chair of the Opawaho-Heathcote River Network, and past-president of National Council of Women (Christchurch Branch). She has a PhD in Communication Disorders, and has worked as computer programmer, business analyst, and waste minimisation consultant.

Lee Sampson is a licensed builder and project manager with significant experience in complex, large-scale deliveries. He is on the steering board of the Otakaro Orchard and is a youth mentor with Big Brother Big Sister.

Dr Melanie Coker is the current Deputy Chair of the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board. She has a PhD in Biochemistry, and owns and manages an educational services company.
