Nelson Arts Festival, 12 - 24 October 2016
Nelson Arts Festival – one of the country’s longest running regional arts festivals - celebrates its 22nd birthday this year, with a memorable line-up of international and home-grown music, theatre, dance, comedy, readers and writers’ talks, and community events.
This year’s Festival delves deep into stranger-than-fiction true-life stories. Watch out for Scribe (The White Guitar), Jean Batten (Miss Jean Batten), 19th Century courtesan Marie Duplessis (Songs for the Fallen), and mass murderer Anders Breivik (Manifesto 2083).
Award-winning British actor, theatre director and producer Guy Masterson’s performances, Under Milk Wood and Shylock, give audiences the chance to experience a performer with an extraordinary theatrical lineage that includes British actor Richard Burton and Italian superstar Marcello Mastroianni.
Other top picks:
• The world premiere of Dust Palace’s The Goblin Market
• Ross McCormack’s dance theatre work Triumphs and Other Alternatives
• The return of Live Live Cinema with Little Shop of Horrors
Music lovers will appreciate Kiwi music legends The Chills, Don McGlashan and Shayne Carter, who share the programme with Miles Calder, Tami Neilson and Delaney Davidson.
A must-see family focused event is the iconic Masked Parade on Friday 21 October, themed Flights of Fancy, followed by Carnivale celebrations in the main street - a fabulous way to welcome in Labour weekend.
