Night Market's New Winter Hours and Search For An Indoor Venue
Kaikohe’s Thursday night market has changed to new winter hours and is looking for an indoor venue for winter. The market began in the summer months in the library square with a goal to run weekly until Easter and then reassess the situation. The initial turn out for the first few months of the Market's life deemed it a huge success and with a very mild Autumn, the market has continued each week with live music, hot food, fresh produce and locally made goods. Colder Winter weather has seen the opening and closing times forward to 4:00pm to 6:30pm.
Some of the stalls have dropped off, but people are enjoying the fresh, spray-free, locally grown vegetables and produce from the Kai Kohekohe Food Co-op stall. “In a Pickle” specialises in home cooked pickles and sauces made from local products. Two Islander baking stalls ensure there’s no shortage of of rewana bread, pies, donuts and other delicious edibles. And regular hangi stall, and frequent bbq fundraisers provide hot kai each week. But the arts and crafts have taken a hit due to the cooler weather. The Kaikohe Cooperative, who run the market have massage, art and other goods lined up but need to move indoors, and are seeking potential ‘stall’ holders to form a permanent co-operative shop front.
