Tekapo Lakefront Development Progress Update

Tekapo Lakefront Development Progress Update

20 June 2016

Work continues on the Mackenzie District Council’s Tekapo Lakefront Development with a new project team appointed to coordinate upcoming commercial developments, and the completion of Stage 2 of the project.

Council has appointed a six-member project team (comprising council staff and elected members) and employed a landscape architect to coordinate the development of new commercial buildings and associated work. It has also approved the appointment of a project manager to lead the team, a position that will be advertised shortly.

“A key goal of the team will be to look across commercial developments to make sure they are well integrated with existing buildings, with any landscaping work and with the planned upgrade of the domain,” says local Tekapo councillor, Murray Cox.

The Stage 2 subdivision works of the project - the construction of a lane between existing buildings and new sites including services to the sites – has now been completed.

In other updates, Council has approved subdivision works for Lakeside Drive. This allows for commercial development to continue along Lakeside Drive and for the construction of a 5-star hotel.

The Council is also currently looking at options for funding new car parks at each end of the Tekapo township plus secondary parking for larger vehicles. Likely funding mixes could come from Council, the Tekapo Community Board and NZTA. The funding would also be used to establish a playground on the domain and to landscape viewing corridors. In the spring, Council will provide an update on when these projects are likely to start.

Planning is also continuing for the construction of new toilet facilities in the town’s main western car park and in the eastern car park. Council intends to seek visitor infrastructure funding from central government for this work.
