Goff Spending Money He Doesn't Have
23 JUNE 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
Responding to comments from Mayoral candidate Phil Goff, that he would like to spend funding generated from tolling Auckland’s motorways on public transport projects,Ratepayers’ Alliance spokesperson, Carmel Claridge, says:
“Phil Goff is doing a Len Brown in saying we need more taxes to fund transport infrastructure. Len Brown introduced the transport levy, but has actually cut the capital spending by Auckland Transport.”
“The Prime Minister and Minister of Transport have been clear that if they impose tolls of Auckland’s roads, there will be a corresponding reduction in fuel taxes. Rather than raising new revenue, this proposal is about changing road users’ behaviour.”
“Mr Goff’s Labour Party colleagues and Auckland Issues spokesperson, Phil Twyford, have been slamming the proposed toll, saying it will cost average Aucklanders between $185 and $2,461 per year if petrol taxes are not correspondingly reduced. We’re calling on Phil Goff to listen to his Labour colleagues and accept that working people cannot afford increases to rates, taxes and charges, without those being reduced elsewhere.”
