Altrusa create comfortable reading corners

Students at Cannons Creek School have benefitted from a recent Altrusa International of Wellington literacy project.

In early August, Altrusa donated 40 handmade cushions and two couch covers to create vibrant reading corners for five classrooms in the junior syndicate of the school. Each classroom received a selection cushions in various sizes, made with beautiful prints and backing materials in turquoise, mint, yellow and pale red.

Altrusa hope the cushions will encourage the youngest students at the school to read more frequently. Cannons Creek School Deputy Principal Kirsty Holden was delighted that the children will be able to “grab a cushion and find a cosy place to read”.

In addition, a generous donation of over 200 books from Gecko Press meant that Altrusa were able to gift a book to every child at the school as part of this project. Altrusa club members attended a school assembly to present the books, which were gratefully received.

For the last 50 years, Altrusa International of Wellington has been making a difference in the Wellington community through leadership, partnership, and service. People looking to be active and social through service are welcome tojoin Altrusa. For more information, check out http://altrusa.org.nz or email president.wellington@altrusa.org.nz
