Krum Welcomes Next Step towards Smokefree Al Fresco Dining in Auckland
Denise Krum, Councillor for the Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward welcomed council committee’s vote today to move towards a comprehensive smokefree bylaw and her insertion of wording ‘to investigate that all council contracts, leases, licences, events, and grants stipulate a smokefree requirement and/or clause’.
“We need to get with the times. Community norms have drastically changed. Smoking in al fresco dining settings is fast going out of favour and Auckland Council needs to respond” Councillor Krum said.
Today’s Regional Strategy and Policy committee voted to both strengthen the current policy and investigate the implementation of a new smokefree bylaw. It is under a bylaw that a ban on smoking in al fresco dining could take place.
“With 5,000 smoke-related deaths per year, this issue deserves our full attention. Bylaws are the norm overseas and we should follow suit” said Councillor Krum.
