Board assists to move Auckland’s Unitary Plan forward
Auckland’s Unitary Plan moved to the next stage today. Following a decision by council’s Auckland Development Committee to commend the recommendations of council officials and pass the finalisation of the Unitary Plan onto Auckland Council’s Governing Body.
The Independent Maori Statutory Board’s legal responsibilities means two board members sit on the Auckland Development Committee and other council committees that deal with the management and stewardship of natural and physical resources. This statutory role gives Māori a voice and two votes at the decision-making table.
The Board has been involved in the Unitary Plan process for the last four years. The Plan is set to be the planning rulebook for Auckland.
Board chairman David Taipari says, “The Board is satisfied with the unanimous decision that recommendations of council officials have been endorsed by councillors and the Independent Maori Statutory Board members on this committee and for efficiency sake has now progressed into the hands of the Governing Body.
We have concluded our part in the Unitary Plan process today and will await the Governing Body’s final decision. Following this, the Board will consider the outcome and continue to fulfil its role and obligations under its establishing legislation.”
