PSA president to run for Porirua mayor
Mike Tana, the president of the New Zealand Public Service Association, has announced he is running for mayor of Porirua.
"Ever since I moved to Porirua to raise my family 13 years ago I've been in love with this place," Mr Tana said.
"Porirua deserves strong, passionate leadership and I'll use my years of experience as a leader to champion our city, its environment and its people."
For the past four years Mike has served as the president of the New Zealand Public Service Association, which has 62,000 members, while also working to protect New Zealand's borders as a senior government biosecurity advisor.
"Porirua is already New Zealand's most beautiful city. I want to work to protect and enhance our amazing places for Porirua people to enjoy and to help untap our city's huge potential for ventures like eco-tourism.
"If we're serious about unleashing our city's potential we also need to strengthen our communities.
"Our people deserve safe healthy homes to live in and to be paid good wages in return for their hard work.
"I'll also make it a priority to re-energise
work on modernising the city centre. Ratepayers deserve more
action on making the city centre one we can all be proud
of.
"My kids and I have played sport in Porirua, I've served on school and kohanga boards, and worked with at risk youth here. I live here because I genuinely believe Porirua is amazing.
"With fresh ideas and passionate leadership we can work together to make it an even better place to live and work," Mr Tana said.
