Preparations Well Under Way to Walk for Water
Preparations are well underway for Saturday’s Walk for Water from Havelock North into the Hastings CBD says organisers Bayden Barber and Damon Harvey.
“We have had strong interest from many in the community for the walk and with a fine day planned, we hope that many people turn up and Walk for Water,” they said.
A group of Havelock North children have painted posters and placards that they will carry from Havelock North’s water fountain to the water feature in the Hastings CBD.
Hastings District Council and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council are supporting the event as well as Ngā Marae o Heretaunga and Ngati Kahungunu Iwi.
Walk for Water is a way for the public to show their support to more than 5000 whanau, friends, business owners and work colleagues who have been impacted by the gastro water contamination that has hit the region over the last fortnight.
The Walk for Water leaves from the water fountain in Havelock North at8.30am tomorrow morning, with people walking down Havelock Road and Heretaunga Street to the water fountain in the Hastings CBD.
Hastings District Council has put in place a traffic management plan and will provide fresh safe water while HBRC is providing free buses to transport people back to Havelock North after the walk. The U-Turn Trust is kindly providing Tunu Tunu BBQ at the City Square.
“We want to see the footpaths full of people showing their support for a return to safe drinking water in Hastings and Havelock North. Make sure you join us all,” they said.
Walkers and their supporters are urged to shop and eat and drink in both Hastings and Havelock North.
