Whare Bike to reopen its doors
Whare Bike will reopen its doors on Thursday the 15th of September, at 5:30-6:30pm.
Founded in 2013 by Ash Holwell, Aaron Edwards and Paul Doherty, the community cycle space has opened in the summers since, and in ten months of operation has provided over 120 bikes to those in our community who need them most - for getting to work, cycling to school, or providing much-needed healthy recreation.
Part of a network of over 400 such spaces throughout the world, Whare Bike takes unwanted bicycles that are headed to landfill, and provides the tools, parts, and training to help people fix them up themselves.
With help from Manaia PHO's Tamariki Ora Fund, Whangarei Men's Shed, Downtown Tools, Ecosolutions, Vulcan Steel, Henderson Reeves, Refining New Zealand and Whangarei District Council, the space has been completely revamped by volunteers Ash Holwell and Andrew Rhodes.
Beautiful bike racks created from scrap steel, broken WDC kurbside recycling bins modified to become parts drawers, and a fresh set of brand new tools will great those who attend the opening. The opening will also feature a bike track for kids young and old, food from Food for Life, and a show 'n' shine of choppers from a local bike builder.
Whare Bike is welcoming everyone who wants to get cycling, get back into cycling, donate their old bikes, or join us in sharing skills to help keep Whangarei healthy, happy and getting where it wants to be.
