Kaibosh a-peels to for help to recover from earthquakes

Media Release for Immediate Release: Friday 9 December 2016

Kaibosh a-peels to Wellingtonians for help to recover from earthquakes

This weekend, Kaibosh Food Rescue is launching their Earthquake A-Peel – a quirky fundraising campaign in collaboration with All Good Bananas that’s guaranteed to put smiles on people’s faces.

Kaibosh’s Wellington City branch was evacuated from its Tennyson Street building following the recent earthquakes. With no access to their premises over the following weeks, their team has been working out of the back of their truck and a pop-up at the Wellington City Mission – all while still rescuing and providing tonnes of fresh, healthy food to Wellingtonians in need.

Kaibosh have recently been allowed access to their building, but have committed to setting up in a new site, so they can be sure that their staff and volunteers are comfortable and confident in the premises.

With the costs of moving and rebuilding everything (including their food sorting area, storage and walk-in chiller) on the horizon, Kaibosh has teamed up with All Good Bananas to create the Earthquake A-Peel, which will see bananas given away at local markets and at businesses around Wellington, to encourage Wellingtonians to donate to Kaibosh during this time of need.

“We need our community to help us out now – we’re doing everything we can to keep our service running smoothly, but it’s really hard without a permanent home,” says Matt Dagger, Kaibosh’s General Manager.

“Everyone’s feeling unsettled and a little down after the earthquakes, so we wanted a fun way to tell Wellingtonians that we need their help. Who can say no to a free banana?”

The bananas have been generously provided by All Good Bananas, with Matt Morrison saying: "Kaibosh is an essential part of our community. It’s vital Wellington gets Kaibosh up and operating at full capacity as soon as possible, and we're really keen to help."

This weekend Kaibosh will be giving away bananas on Saturday 10 December at Thorndon Farmers' Market, and on Sunday 11 December at Harbourside Market. They will also be at Harbourside Market next Sunday 18 December, and local businesses can look forward to receiving baskets of bananas throughout next week.

Dagger says: “Kaibosh is lucky to be part of such a generous community. Moving to a new premises is going to be costly for us, but we know we’ll come through this stronger than ever with the generosity and goodwill of Wellingtonians behind us.”

Kaibosh is asking people to help by:
• Making a donation at www.kaibosh.org.nz
• Joining Food Rescue Heroes, their supporters’ programme
• Organising business fundraisers or donations
• Holding their own fundraisers
