What does fly--fishing the Waiau River have in common with Whale Watching in Hawaii and visiting pyramids in Guatemala?
All of these adventures recently made Andrew Harper’s prestigious list of Indelible Travel Memories for 2016 – an awesome feat for the family--run tourism operator.
During 2016, Harper travelled to Fiordland for a wilderness fishing adventure with local operator Fiordland Outdoors Company and their Distinctive Fishing Experience brand.
Editor of luxury travel newsletter The Hideaway Report, Harper travels the world incognito in pursuit of rare and unique places and activities.
With the help of experienced fly fishing guide Ken Mitchell, Harper caught 15 rainbow trout on the mighty Waiau River, accessed via jet boat.
“It was precisely the kind of experience for which keen trout fishermen travel halfway around the world,” says Harper.
For Christine and Mark Wallace, owners of Fiordland Outdoors Company, making such a well--known and revered travel list is a dream come true.

“Exploring Antarctica and seeing the North Face of the Eiger also made Andrew’s list – it is so thrilling to us to find out he rates fly fishing on the Waiau right up there with such well--known travel experiences, we are very proud” she says.
The Fiordland Outdoors Company and their brands, Distinctive Fishing Experiences, Fish Jet and Fiordland Water Taxi began in 2012 as a result of Mark’s love for fishing and exploring Southland’s Great Outdoors.
Now in its fourth season, jet boat fishing trips on the Waiau have become a staple for visitors to Fiordland and Te Anau.
