State Highway south of Kaikoura closed
due to wet weather, rockfall hazard
State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura closed after 11 am today due to wet weather and subsequent increased rockfall risk for drivers travelling between Peketa and Goose Bay.
The highway will be closed overnight, as per usual, and the aim is to reopen after 8.30 am, Wednesday, 8 March, says Lee Wright, NZ Transport Agency Journey Manager.
Electronic signs at key points will advise drivers to take the inland road (Route 70) via Culverden and Waiau to Kaikoura while SH1 to the south is closed between Peketa and Goose Bay.
The Transport Agency thanks all drivers for being patient while the highways and roads into Kaikoura are under repair with changes and temporary closures happening at short notice.
