The Honourable - Dame Silvia Cartwright, PCNZM, DBE, QSO is to speak at the New Horizons for Women’s Trust | Hine Kahukura Annual Meeting on 31 March 2017 in Wellington.
Established twenty five years ago the New Horizons for Women's Trust | Hine Kahukura continues to inspire women to create new horizons through education and research. Retiring Chair Dr Jo Innes is proud to announce that this year's keynote speaker at the Annual General Meeting will be one of the Trust's three Patrons - The Hon Dame Silvia Cartwright, PCNZM, DBE, and QSO.
The Hon Dame Silvia Cartwright was New Zealand’s first woman Chief District Court judge in 1989 and in 1993 also the first woman appointed to the New Zealand High Court. She became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1989. Upon her retirement from the High Court, she was granted the use of the title "The Honourable" for life. She was made a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001 and awarded the QSO at the State luncheon at Parliament on 2 August 2006. In 2007 Hon Dame Silvia was appointed as one of two international judges in the Trial Chamber of the Cambodia Tribunal by Cambodia's Supreme Council Magistracy.
