Road Upgrade for New Regional Landfill

MEDIA RELEASE DATE: 5 April 2017

Road Upgrade for New Regional Landfill

Major road works are about to begin on SH3 at the intersection with Rotokare Road, 3km south of Eltham.

The work is the first stage in the development of the new regional landfill and is being done to improve visibility and provide safe intersection access for road users.

Project Manager, Nigel Auger, says the work, which is being jointly funded by South Taranaki, New Plymouth and Stratford District Councils and New Zealand Transport Agency, is expected to be completed in 5 months weather permitting.

“The project includes relocating the existing intersection 100m south to the crest of the local rise, to increase visibility of traffic turning into and out of the junction; adding a left turning lane on SH3 from Eltham, a right turning lane on SH3 from Hawera and a right turning lane on SH3 for traffic turning from Rotokare Road,” says Mr Auger.

“Over the course of the work the road will remain open and traffic management will be in place along the length of the construction site.

“We ask people to drive with care through the work-site,” he says.

Group Manager of STDC engineering services, Brent Manning, says Taranaki’s District Councils have been working collaboratively on a regional approach to managing solid waste since 2000.

“The Regional Landfill is just another example of how our three Councils work together for the benefit of all our residents.”

The new regional landfill should be opened by July 2019 when the existing NPDC owned landfill at Colson Road is expected to be at capacity.
