The Mess We’re In: Auckland’s Housing Bubble from a Construction Sector Perspective
AUT Professor of Construction Management John Tookey, recently interview by Kathryn Ryan on RNZ’s Nine to Noon Show [here], has written a report on the mess that is the Auckland housing market. While a lot has been written about the crisis of housing affordability, not a lot of this commentary has looked at the logistics – and the logic – of the construction industry. Why can’t we ramp up the rate of building? Will more land solve the problem? Will productivity gains reduce prices? Importantly, John explains why the market will not solve the problems of supply and affordability.
