Dramatic search and ‘rescue’ in Auckland Harbour
23 May 2017 (2:00 pm)
A dramatic search and rescue
demonstration will take place on Auckland Harbour from 2.30
pm tomorrow (Wednesday), involving a US Coastguard plane, a
rescue helicopter winching people from the water and
flares.
“We’re demonstrating methods used in real rescues,” says Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand manager Mike Hill. “Aucklanders will have a rare opportunity to see a US Coastguard Hercules in action.”
This is the first time in over 20 years that a US Coastguard aircraft has visited New Zealand.
People
in the Mission Bay and St Heliers area will be able to see
the demonstration with planes and helicopters flying low
over the harbour between 2-4 pm.
NZ is hosting the
Pacific Search and Rescue (PACSAR) conference in Auckland
from 22-26 May. Over 100 people from 26 countries are
attending to strengthen search and rescue in the
Pacific.
