Redruth Resource Recovery Park now open

A new safer, cleaner and easier way to drop off green waste and cleanfill is now open.

The Resource Recovery Park, which has been built at the Redruth site, offers a bigger, completely flat space to dispose of green waste and clean fill, such as sand, soil and clay as well as bricks and concrete, separate from the rubbish disposal area.

Ruth Clarke, Timaru District Council Waste Minimisation Manager said that the new area means that people no longer have to lift heavy or bulky loads over or under the bars and can tip or offload their materials more easily.

“After going through the weighbridge, cars with clean fill or green waste can go into the new area to drop off this material, and the former drop off area will now be solely for rubbish.

“As well as being more convenient for users of the site, the new area will also be more environmentally friendly, with all the storm water run-off being collected and treated on-site before discharging into the storm water system.”

The new $400,000 project is the latest part of the council’s ongoing work to extend the life of its landfill at Redruth by diverting as much reusable material as possible.

“People in Timaru have really embraced our three bin system and are diverting huge amounts of recyclable and organic materials from landfill,” she said.

“The Resource Recovery Park aims to make it easy and convenient for people dropping off materials at Redruth, and long term will provide more recycling opportunities for residents”

The new site joins the comprehensive range of facilities at Redruth, including a Compost Facility, a state of the art Materials Recovery facility that sorts recycling, a pyrolysis facility to process waste timber, a reuse shop and the landfill for environmental disposal.

There is also The Crow’s Nest reuse shop, which gives items such as furniture and household goods a new life.
