Safety messages in reo Maori

Locals can expect to have their linguistic talents expanded this month.

As part of Maori Language Week, Gisborne District Council’s road safety division have put up billboards throughout the region with safety messages in Te Reo. The signs are a reminder to stay safe on the roads.

Tairawhiti Roads general manager Dave Hadfield said the signs aim to both raise awareness and educate the wider community.

“This sits well with our community and is a nice way to celebrate Maori Language Week which runs from the 11 to15 of September,” he said.

The signs are a collaborative initiative between Tairawhiti Roads and Gisborne District Council. The signs cover messages such as always wear a seatbelt and drive phone free.

The signs will be swapped out for new messages in the coming months and will alternate between Maori and English.
