Road Open/Closure Update - Plan Your Travel

Following ongoing work by our crews today, please find to follow an update to help you plan your travel.

Important: Both SH1 South of Kaikoura between Peketa and Goose Bay, and the Inland Route 70 will be CLOSED overnight from 6pm-7am. We appreciate your patience and support while our crews work hard to get these routes reopened and safe as quickly as possible.

Due to this weather event, these routes remain fragile so please check www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) before you travel for the latest real time information. There may be further changes.

SH1 SOUTH OF KAIKOURA BETWEEN PEKETA AND GOOSE BAY

WILL CLOSE tonight at 6pm as normal

WILL REOPEN tomorrow morning at 7am-12noon. This area is still fragile so expect delays,allow extra time and if at all possible please consider delaying your travel.

INLAND ROUTE 70 – NORTH OF MT LYFORD TO KAIKOURA

REMAINS CLOSED tonight due to ongoing work to make this road safe and serviceable following the flooding at Whalesback (around 4km North of Mt Lyford) and other more minor works along this road.

DUE TO REOPEN tomorrow at 12noon. But as this route also remains fragile, please checkwww.nzta.govt.nz/traffic or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) before you travel.

SH65 SECTION OF ALTERNATE ROUTE BETWEEN PICTON AND CHRISTCHURCH – OPEN THROUGH A 1.5 HOUR DIVERSION – EXPECTED TO REOPEN EARLY THIS EVENING

Following work to clear this truck crash today, it is EXPECTED to reopen to one lane early this evening. Please check www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) for real time travel information.

Until then, the current 1.5 hour diversion has southbound traffic travelling from O’Sullivan’s Bridge, south of Murchison, onto SH6, then SH69 at Inangahua, then SH7 at Reefton which leads them through to Springs Junction. Northbound traffic is being diverted in the reverse direction.
