Man occupying Norfolk Pine to stop it being felled by developers

This morning at 6am a man climbed a 150 year old Norfolk Pine at Snell’s Beach that the local community have been fighting to save from felling for development.

The pine was due to be felled this morning by contractors but the man in the tree says he won’t come down until the developers agrees to save it.

Charlie Baggins, the man in the tree, is an arborist who’s sick of seeing the succession of beautiful trees that have been felled for development since the watering down of the RMA over the last couple of years.

Snell’s Beach community members had previously reached out to local councillors for help and they even went to the Environment Court seeking an interim protection order which was not granted.

Baggins' occupation of the tree this morning was a last ditch effort to save it.

Baggins has been advised by the police that’s he’s trespassing but says he won’t come down until the tree is saved.
