New Partnership Sees Ironmāori Return to Taupō in
2018
One of Aotearoa’s most popular multi-sport events, IronMāori, is set to return to Taupō in 2018 following a new three-year partnership announced by the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board (‘Trust Board’) and IronMāori.
The Trust Board sponsored the inaugrual IronMāori Taupō-Nui-a-Tia event in March this year. This proved to be very popular with Ngāti Tūwharetoa and the local community, attracting more than 600 participants in the swim, cycle and run.
Trust Board CEO, Topia Rameka, says following the success of IronMāori Taupō-nui-a-Tia this year, the Trust Board was keen to extend this relationship with IronMāori.
“Improving the health and wellbeing of whanau is important and partnering up with movements such as IronMāori make absolute sense – they are able to capture and motivate a generation of whānau who otherwise would not feel comfortable to participate in triathlon events.”
IronMāori founder, Heather Skipworth, is also delighted with the new three year sponsorship and is excited to see a return to Taupō. “We saw how popular this year’s event was – the number of entrants in Taupō exceeded our expectations on all fronts. We were full house.”
“Given the strong level of interest shown this year, we are investigating the possibility of accommodating more entrants in 2018 if this can be achieved within our safety and management plans,” said Heather.

Taupō-nui-a-Tia will take place on the Taupō waterfront on
Saturday, 24 March 2018. Further event details will be
announced in the New Year.
The Trust Board will again be
encouraging registered Ngāti Tūwharetoa whānau to take
part in the 2018 event by offering subsidised entry
fees.
