Work has started on the third and final stage of Avalon Park’s transformation.

Main contractor, Downer NZ, is preparing to replace the old timber bridge, spanning the model boating pond, with a more easily accessible feature bridge. The project also involves redeveloping the spaces around the pond with upgraded paths and new plantings and creating an inviting entrance off Fairway Drive.

The work is expected to be completed in July this year. The budget for the final stage of the six-hectare park redevelopment is $2 million.

Council’s overall objective to develop Avalon Park as a regional destination with extensive play and recreation opportunities began to pay off with the completion of the city’s premier playground in 2016.

Hutt City Council’s Reserves Planner, Kelly Crandle, says the number of people using the park has significantly increased since the playground opened.

“We know anecdotally that people are visiting Avalon Park from across the region from as far away as Masterton and the Kapiti Coast, and it’s also attracting tourists from beyond the region.

“So we’re very happy with how the park is being transformed and expect its popularity and reputation to increase further with the completion of this final stage.”

During construction, it will be largely business as usual for park users with the playground, Lions Train, mini golf, junior cycle track and the Avalon Pavilion remaining open.

However, there will be limited access to the area around the model boating pond and capacity at the Fairway Drive car park will be partially reduced during construction work.

While contractors’ priority is public safety, Council is asking people using the park to take care while in the vicinity of the areas being developed.
