Media release on Natureland grant

The Nelson Residents Association was disturbed to read the report in the Nelson Mail of 23 May, detailing allegations from several Nelson City Councillors that Councillor Rutledge had "lambasted" them for reducing the ratepayer funded grant to Natureland to below that which was sought. Mr Rutledge's behaviour, if it was as described by multiple sources, was reprehensible and unbecoming of a City Councillor.

Mr Rutledge's behaviour raises concerns about conflict of interest, but more importantly his bullying behaviour is a poor example for the staff within an organisation which has previously had a bullying problem. We expect our governance body to set high standards and set an example to those it governs over.

Further, the Nelson Residents Assn has concerns that such bullying and strong-arm tactics may be more prevalent than the public knows about because the Council frequently meets in secret "workshops" out of the public eye, or goes into "public excluded" session to discuss contentious items.

This incident demonstrates the importance of openness and transparency in local government so that all ratepayers can be satisfied that decisions are being made through rational and considered debate rather than through bullying and intimidation.
