Obituary: Clive Green

Clive Green, credited by many as helping shape Auckland’s gym scene, has died in Auckland aged 84.

Born in 1934 in County Durham, northeast of England, Clive was a gifted athlete, rugby player and boxer at school and developed a lifelong interest in weight lifting and physical fitness.

In 1951 he moved to Australia and during obligatory national service in the Army, continued boxing, won heavy weight titles and later, the Mr Victoria bodybuilding title.

He moved to New Zealand in 1955, aged 21, intending to eventually move to Canada.

But friendships and marriage kept him in Auckland where, in the late 1950’s, he opened a gym on Karangahape Road, later relocating to Broadway Newmarket for some years.

In 1961 Clive competed in the Mr Universe body building contest in the UK and was placed third in the Professional Class.

In the1970’s, Les Mills asked Clive to manage his gym in Victoria Street while he prepared himself for the Commonwealth games.

Clive went out on his own again in 1976, and with the help of several business partners opened the Clive Green Health Centre which quickly became the place to train for top athletes, sports people and entertainers.

In retirement Clive continued to swim and work out almost every day into his eighties.

He is survived by 4 children, grand and great grandchildren and will be fare-welled at Purewa on Friday July 6th.

His family is asking for donations to Alzheimer’s Research in lieu of flowers.
