Pomegranate Kitchen hosts premiere of movie about refugee cooks
Pomegranate Kitchen is delighted to announce that it is hosting the New Zealand premiere of Soufra, a documentary about a woman who starts a catering company in a refugee camp in Lebanon.
Soufra will screen at 6.15pm at the Penthouse Cinema on Wednesday October 24.
Pomegranate Kitchen will use the profits from the event to provide training and employment for the former refugee cooks who work for the Wellington social enterprise.
Soufra is the
story of Mariam Shaar who has spent her entire life in the
Burl El Barajneh refugee camp south of Beirut. Using a
micro-loan she set up a catering company called
Soufra, then, working with a team of fellow refugee
women, she expanded it into a food truck business.
The business has had a profound impact on the lives
of the women involved in it. They say that previously they
felt hopeless and rarely left the camp. Now they feel
confident and excited about the future and are leaders in
their community.
Pomegranate Kitchen is a
catering company that employs former refugees on a part-time
basis to prepare tasty Middle Eastern food for delivery in
central and suburban Wellington. It also caters for events
such as weddings and conferences.
General manager Rebecca Stewart says she and the rest of the Pomegranate Kitchen team can’t wait to see the movie.
“Apparently the food in it looks amazing so we’ll be really interested to see what the cooks in the film make,” she says. “Maybe it will give us some new ideas!”
