Community Fun Day: Bringing Awareness to World Homeless Day

Community Fun Day: Bringing Awareness to World Homeless Day

A community collaboration between Wellington agencies for World Homeless Day.

On Saturday 13 October, over eight different local Wellington community organisations are hosting a community fun day, alongside those that they assist. The purpose of World Homeless Day is to draw attention to people’s needs locally and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness.

This event has been organised to raise awareness of World Homeless Day and to promote collaboration between organisations Compassion Soup Kitchen, Catholic Social Services, Kahungunu Whanau Services, the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society Wellington, the Wellington City Council, the Wellington City Mission, the Wellington Night Shelter, and the Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust.

In the past, these organisations collaborated on the 14 Hours Homeless fundraiser and awareness event which had a lot of community support.

The Māra /garden at the Soup Kitchen will be open and has space for activities to be run. There will be activities for all ages. A koha café will be run downstairs and tables will be available inside to display information or to meet with visitors. An open mic space will be available for people to perform music, poetry or to speak.

Karen Holland, manager of the Soup Kitchen says, “We are really looking forward to this day. Together with our whanau, our agencies hope to raise awareness of World Homeless Day, to have some fun and provide the opportunity for our whanau to share their skills. The aim of this fun day is to help educate people about local issues pertaining to housing deprivation and the work of local agencies who work in this space. From this, we hope to develop a greater sense of cooperation and community.”

The community market will be held in the carpark and Māra of the Compassion Soup Kitchen on 132 Tory Street, Te Aro, Wellington, from 10am-3pm.
