Wellington Chamber Applauds Council Scrutiny

Wellington Chamber Applauds Council Scrutiny of Convention Centre

Wellington Council’s decision to re-evaluate the business case supporting development of the city’s proposed convention centre is the right move says, Wellington Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive John Milford.

"A lot has changed since the original Wellington convention centre business case was put together and approved by councillors, so I’m pleased to see they are double checking that it still stacks up," says Mr Milford.

"The concept unveiled three years ago now no longer involves Sir Peter Jackson and a joint movie museum.

"The Chamber supports the convention centre and the valuable activity it will attract into Wellington, but only on the basis it provides an economic return to the region. Putting together a business case based on the new concept allows for an informed decision about whether to proceed or not.

"I would expect the new business case to ensure the convention centre produces a positive return to local businesses and ratepayers. I also expect it to examine the role of the proposed 1500-square metre exhibition space and any commercial relationship with Te Papa for its use.

"Te Papa has benefited from substantial financial support over the years from the Downtown Levy, paid for by central city businesses and hospitality venues, and the entirety of the Council’s financial support to Te Papa, both directly and through this proposed new exhibition space, should be scrutinised."
