Boundary alteration application received
10 October 2018
The Local Government Commission has received an application seeking the alteration of the boundary between Horowhenua District and Palmerston North City.
The application seeks to have the southern boundary of the city extended to include the township of Tokomaru and the surrounding area, and the neighbouring locality of Opiki. These communities currently fall within Horowhenua.
The processes for dealing with such applications are set out in Schedule 3 of the Local Government Act. In the first instance the Commission is required to consider whether it will agree to assess the application. This involves considering whether there is sufficient information and whether there is sufficient evidence of community support. It is expected that preliminary step this will be completed before the end of the year.
If the Commission agrees to assess the application, this will trigger a formal reorganisation process, including consultation with affected communities.
