Historic Raetihi Christmas Carnival

Raetihi has often been known as Historic Raetihi. And there’s a reason for that, says Raetihi Promotions member Lucy Conway. “While looking to the future, we also remember our past and like to celebrate Historic Events,” says Lucy.

“In recent times we’ve had the 100th anniversary of the Parapara Highway, the 100th anniversary of the Royal Theatre, and this year we had the centenary of the Fire of 1918.” This years’ Christmas carnival and parade on December 8, continues with the historic theme. The Journeaux family archive has turned up some photos of Christmas parades from long ago – maybe not 100 years, but they are in black and white so they could be, says Lucy.

The annual market day and parade is a big community day full of things to see and do and listen to. There will be live music, stalls, dunking machine, quick fire raffles, miniature pony rides, needle in the haystack competition and more. “And let’s not forget the magnificent parade, with our ‘traditional’ Father Christmas.” “If you’d like to have a stall on the day, you can pick up the necessary forms at the Raetihi Information Centre, or find them on www.raetihi.com under the events tab. “Or ring me on 06-385-3123 to arrange getting one.

If you’re selling food you need to have your forms back by 30 November so they can go to council for approval.” All the usual prizes for fancy dress and parade floats will be there, with extra points for having a historical theme. “So get your thinking caps on and let’s make this the best one yet,” challenges Lucy.

Cash prizes for three best floats: $150 for 1st, $100 for 2nd, $50 for third. Spot prizes for decorated bikes, scooters and prams. It's all go. Hangi available this year too. Don't miss out.
