Thousands flock to the waterfront to explore SeePort Festival

Over 11,000 people visited Ports of Auckland on day one – ahead of an outdoor concert and fireworks display set to draw even larger crowds, on day two.

Over 11,000 paid a visit to the Ports of Auckland today for their annual open weekend, SeePort, with two more days to go.

“We are thrilled to have had more than 11,000 of people behind the red fence today. SeePort is a fantastic opportunity to host Aucklanders and visitors, learn about our port and partners, and most importantly have some fun” says Tony Gibson, Ports of Auckland CEO.

The festival is a three-day celebration of Auckland City’s beautiful waterfront and rich maritime heritage. It is one of New Zealand’s largest free events, returning in 2019 for a sixth year of seaside fun.

Festival-goers had the opportunity today to explore parts of the HMNZS Canterbury; brought alongside Captain Cook Wharf by the Royal New Zealand Navy, the events Major Supporting Partner. Also on show were helicopter displays, mini-golf, virtual reality experiences and free bus tours of the port.

The port is gearing up for a big Sunday night as they play host to an outdoor concert with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and iconic Kiwi vocalists; The Lady Killers. In the past, the concert has seen the red gates shut as the wharves fill quickly with eager crowds.

The concert will end with a bang as fireworks are set off high above the Waitematā Harbour; a display often touted as the best in Auckland.

SeePort Festival runs until 4pm on Monday 28 January, giving Aucklanders the chance to learn, explore, eat and be entertained over the only three days of the year the port is open to the public. See a full schedule of events at www.seeport.co.nz
