Cape Kidnappers landslide update

An interim geologist’s report into the landslide at Cape Kidnappers will be presented to Hastings district councillors at a meeting on March 5.

Geological investigations have been ongoing since the first landslide on January 23, which was followed by a second significant landslide at the same location on February 2, and another on February 7.

Monitoring to assess the extent of the instability of the area is continuing with surveys being undertaken once a week, both visually and by drones.

The report to council will contain information that will help inform councillors’ decision making around whether there should be further analysis undertaken of the coastline, and consideration of beach access to Cape Kidnappers.

The ongoing instability of the area means access to Cape Kidnappers via the beach from Clifton, which was closed by the Hastings District Council after the first landslide, remains closed.

Public safety continues to be a priority, and people are instructed to stay away from the area until further notice.
